Lawrence Police investigating robbery

Police are looking for a man who robbed Westminster Inn, 2525 W. Sixth St., Friday night.

The robbery was reported at 10:23 p.m. after the suspect demanded money from a male clerk working at the hotel’s front desk, Lt. Steve Zarnowiec said. The suspect was last seen running to the east away from the hotel, Zarnowiec said.

The suspect indicated to the clerk he had a gun, but the clerk did not see a weapon, Zarnowiec said.

Several officers converged on the area and launched a search. About 1 a.m. Saturday, police surrounded Rockledge Apartments on Rockledge Road near Sixth Street, witnesses in the area said.

Police obtained some information that allowed them to develop a possible suspect but had made no arrests as of Saturday, Zarnowiec said.

According to the description of the robber given to police, he had a blue covering on his head. He was wearing shorts and a striped shirt. He was about 5 feet 8 inches tall and appeared to be in his early 30s.

One killed, one injured in one-vehicle crash

A woman was killed and a man was injured Saturday when a pickup truck lost control and overturned along U.S. Highway 40 about six miles west of Lawrence, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said.

Officers responded to the wreck about 6:30 p.m. and remained at the scene late Saturday night. They were still working to confirm the identities of the victims, Lt. Kathy Tate said.

Eastbound and westbound lanes of the highway remained blocked at 10:30 p.m. because officers were still investigating the scene, Tate said.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. She had to be extricated with special equipment from the truck, Tate said. The man was flown to KU Med, Kansas City, Kan., by Life Star helicopter. There was no information available regarding his condition.

The truck had been eastbound when it left the highway and overturned along the north side, Tate said. No other details were available late Saturday.

Assisting at the scene were the Lecompton Fire Department and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical.

Hangar changes OK’d

State higher education officials have approved a plan by Kansas University to renovate the KU Hangar at Lawrence Municipal Airport.

The project is expected to cost between $800,000 and $1 million, and will be funded from the KU Endowment Assn.

The plan, recently approved by the Kansas Board of Regents, would include construction of a second floor with a laboratory, offices and conference room.
