City manager Buford Watson presented a calendar 1978 municipal budget calling for a tax increase of 2.169 mills, or $2.17 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. The proposed 6 percent mill levy increase would bring the city tax rate to 37.139 mills.

IN 1902

On July 13, 1902, the Lawrence World noted that there were nine offers for locations of the post office building. The World stated “It is the general impression that the site west of the Lawrence National Bank (northeast corner of today’s Seventh and Vermont streets) will be chosen. This paper indicated as much a month ago and sees no reason yet to change its mind.” Costs for land varied from $1,500 to $12,000. Eventually the northwest corner of today’s Seventh and New Hampshire streets was chosen for the post office.
