22-year-old charged with criminal trespassing after rooftop adventure

Spider-man he wasn’t.

But a Kansas University student certainly inspired the awe of late-night downtowners who were surprised to see him frolicking across the roof of the Douglas County Courthouse.

“It was pretty funny for a while,” said Brandon McKeever, manager at It’s Brothers bar across the street. “He was running back and forth trying to hide from the police.”

After apparently clambering up a drainpipe to the roof, 22-year-old Jeffrey Bergfalk decided it was time for a change. So he moved the hands on two of the four clock faces atop the tower.

The shenanigans came to a halt early Friday after Bill Bell, the county’s director of buildings and grounds, was called about 3 a.m. to open the courthouse. Then a sheriff’s officer used a trap door to the roof to get to the suspect.

Bergfalk, 1339 Ohio, was charged several hours later in Douglas County District Court with misdemeanor criminal trespassing.

It’s unclear when Bergfalk made his ascent, but Douglas County Sheriff’s officers were sent about 2:30 a.m. to the courthouse at 1100 Mass. to investigate a report of a man on the roof, Lt. Kathy Tate said.

Before that, the courthouse commotion caught the attention of people leaving area bars, including McKeever and others at It’s Brothers, 1105 Mass.

Sheriff’s officers attempted without success to coax the suspect off the roof, Tate said. Soon, Lawrence Police arrived to assist; then a fire truck was called.

At one point, the man on the roof climbed up to the overhang below the faces on the clock tower and moved the hands on two of the faces, McKeever said.

Bergfalk, last year a KU sophomore from Mission, was released late Friday from the Douglas County Jail on his own recognizance. His next court appearance is at 1:30 p.m. July 31.

If convicted, Bergfalk could be sentenced to a maximum of six months in jail and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine.
