Royals call up Bukvich, agree with No. 1 pick

? The Kansas City Royals purchased the contract of pitcher Ryan Bukvich from Triple-A Omaha Thursday and designated pitcher Cory Bailey for assignment.

Bukvich, 24, was 1-0 with eight saves and a 0.00 ERA in 12 appearances at Omaha. Earlier at Double-A Wichita, he was 1-1 with eight saves and a 1.41 ERA in 21 games.

Bailey is 3-4 this season with a 4.11 ERA in a team-high 37 appearances.

Also, the Royals have agreed to terms with right-hander Zack Greinke, their first-round draft pick.

Greinke, 18, who was 9-2 with an 0.55 ERA in 12 games at Apopka (Fla.) High, this year, will report to the Royals’ Gulf Coast League team on Monday. The Royals said he would sign his contract on Saturday.

“We are extremely pleased to sign Zack Greinke,” director of scouting Deric Ladnier said. “We are confident that Zack has the skills to be a future frontline pitcher in the major leagues.”

Greinke is the eighth pitcher taken in the first round by the Royals in the past six years. He was the sixth player overall and fifth pitcher taken in the June draft.
