Throng expected for youth tourney

Lawrence, Baldwin and Tonganoxie will be teeming with young basketball players this weekend.

Approximately 1,600 boys and girls in grades four through 12 will be participating in a three-day Mid-America Youth Basketball tournament sponsored by Sport 2 Sport.

More than 200 teams from Kansas and Missouri will be playing 568 games at 11 locations in Lawrence, three in Baldwin and two in Tonganoxie.

Junior Legion zone delayed one day

A faulty sprinkler that flooded Free State High’s baseball diamond forced a one-day postponement in the Junior Legion zone tournament. The Lawrence Mavericks, scheduled to open tourney play on Thursday night, will now meet Olathe North at 6 p.m. today.

The championship game, originally scheduled for Sunday, will now be played on Monday. The winner will advance to the State Junior Legion tourney in Hutchinson.
