Van Pelt one stroke back of leader in Milwaukee

? Bo Van Pelt couldn’t have picked a better place or time to lighten up.

Easing back on his drives, he drastically improved his accuracy Thursday, shooting a 7-under 64, one shot behind leader Tommy Armour III in the opening round of the Greater Milwaukee Open.

“I finally didn’t put myself in a hole,” said Van Pelt, 27, who is seeking his first PGA Tour victory. “I try to hit the greatest shot all the time. Sometimes you just have to scale it back; you don’t have to be a hero all the time.”

While Van Pelt, whose best finish is a tie for 20th at the 1999 Bell Canadian Open, was ecstatic, Armour, who won the Phoenix Open 12 years ago for his only PGA Tour victory, shrugged off his quick start.

“It’s been a while since I led after the first round,” he said. “But, I mean, there’s three more days left. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. I’m just looking forward to tomorrow.”

Also at 64 were Kenny Perry, Deane Pappas and Jeff Sluman.

Defending champion Shigeki Maruyama was two shots off the lead at 65 along with Steve Stricker, Bryce Molder and Kelly Gibson.

Teske conquers wind to lead Farr by a shot

Sylvania, Ohio On a day when everyone else struggled with the wind, Rachel Teske strung together four birdies to shoot a 67 and grab the first-round lead Thursday at the Jamie Farr Kroger Classic.

Swirling gusts turned shot selection into a nightmare, frequently throwing shots back at the players or hurling them off target.

Defending champion and three-time Farr winner Se Ri Pak stumbled to a 72, her first round over par at the tournament since 1997.

Dorothy Delasin, with two of her three career wins in Ohio at the Giant Eagle tournament, was a shot back at 68 after a bogey-free round. She was tied with rookie Jeanne-Marie Busuttil, born in France but a product of Arizona State’s women’s golf program.

Rose takes 1-stroke lead at rainy Loch Lomond

Luss, Scotland Justin Rose got off to a fast start while others dodged the rain Thursday to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Scottish Open.

Rose, winner of four tournaments this year, was 5-under at the turn and, after bogeys at Nos. 11 and 12, added three more birdies for 6-under 65.

Miles Tunnicliff, winner of the Great North Open three weeks ago, and Fredrik Jacobson were tied for second, while former Masters and British Open champion Sandy Lyle had a 67 to tie for fourth.

Two-time U.S. Open champion Ernie Els was in a group at 68 that also included Americans Brad Faxon and Dean Wilson, along with European Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance.

Irwin out front in SPC with record first round

Dearborn, Mich. Hale Irwin set nine-hole and first-round records Thursday in taking a two-shot lead in the Senior Players Championship at the TPC of Michigan.

Irwin, who birdied six of the first seven holes, shot a 7-under 29 on the front nine and finished with an 8-under 64 to continue his trend of playing well at the fourth and final major on the Senior PGA Tour.

Stewart Ginn was at 66, while Mark McCumber shot a 67 as did Tom Jenkins.
