John H. Shumaker

? Graveside services for John H. Shumaker, 90, Oskaloosa, formerly of Humboldt, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Pleasant View Cemetery, Oskaloosa.

Mr. Shumaker died Saturday, July 6, 2002, at Hickory Point Care Center, Oskaloosa.

He was born July 20, 1911, in Somerset County, Pa., the son of Robert “John” and Minnie (Schweder) Shumaker. He had lived in Oskaloosa for more than 20 years, moving from Humboldt, where he had lived many years.

Mr. Shumaker was a driller in oil fields in southeast Kansas near Humboldt for many years. He also had worked in his parents’ lumber saw mill for several years.

He was a member of First United Presbyterian Church, Oskaloosa.

He married Charlotte Berniece Gates on Dec. 5, 1932, in Olathe. She died May 4, 1992.

Survivors include a daughter, Berniece Gates, Perry; two brothers, Calvin C., Lena, Ill., and Paul A., Eugene, Ore.; three sisters, Viola Catherine Shade, Freeport, Ill., Mary Ellen Essex, Huntington, Md., and Malora E. Carlson, Hopkins, Minn.; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Mary Jane Bentley, and a great-grandson died earlier.
