Capital improvement requests made

City capital improvement projects typically involve bricks, mortar and pipes. Wednesday night at the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission, however, requests for projects were more oriented toward megabytes and cyberspace.

Four people attended the meeting to make requests for future CIP budgets. Three speakers asked that the city allot money for computers and software to help the public better understand the community.

Requests included that specialized city mapping information be put online and money for the police department to better track crimes. A third asked for computer surveying equipment to identify infrastructure needs in neighborhoods.

“It’s not actually a capital improvement project,” said Ed Tato of the East Lawrence Neighborhood Assn. “It’s planning for next year’s capital improvements.”

The commission will consider a capital improvements project list in April.
