Old home town – 100 years ago today

On Feb. 26, 1902, the Lawrence Journal commented on the killing of Ed Katherman by Juno B. Shane, local photographer, apparently without any provocation. The Journal observed “In the awful tragedy that was enacted on the street yesterday there are lessons that may be learned with profit. The officials have known of the irresponsible condition of the man for a long time, and whether that condition was the result of mental weakness or devilish spirit, makes no difference. He could have been restrained, and he should have been, long ago. His actions in the past have given ample reason for putting him where he would be harmless, for even if he could not be adjudged insane, he could, and should have been confined because of crimes accomplished and attempted.”
