Funds diverted from athletes

? More than $285,000 that was supposed to go to Massachusetts Olympic athletes instead went to the U.S. Olympic Committee, according to a state audit. Bay State taxpayers paid $285,785 between 1994 and 2000 to the Massachusetts U.S. Olympic Fund, which is supposed to benefit athletes in training from Massachusetts, auditor Joseph DeNucci said Monday. Instead, contributions to the fund were sent to the U.S. Olympic Committee for general purposes and not kept for Bay State residents, the audit found.
