Domestic violence forum explores abuse issues
A public forum on domestic violence drew about 30 people to the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Auditorium Monday night.
Representatives of the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Abuse, Rape Victim Survivor Service and Women’s Transitional Care Services spoke about what their organizations did and answered questions from the audience.
Sarah Jane Russell, executive director of RVSS, said the three groups often collaborated to better serve the needs of women and children affected by domestic violence.
“Tonight, if you leave here with one thing, I want to assure you how closely we work together,” she said.
Other topics discussed included tenant/landlord problems for domestic violence victims, school awareness programs, and how domestic violence is prosecuted.
“There has been an increase in the enthusiasm of district attorneys to prosecute,” Russell said.
The event was sponsored by the Lawrence American Association of University Women.
“I was very happy to see the students here,” said Marilyn Greathouse, president of the association. “Everybody needs to know more about these problems even if they’re not directly involved in it.”
