Township firefighter injured fighting rural shed fire

Linwood  A firefighter suffered minor injuries Saturday night fighting a shed fire about five miles south of Basehor, the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Greg Krouse, 18, was taken by Leavenworth ambulance to Providence Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan., where he was treated for second-degree burns and released, a hospital spokeswoman said. Krouse, a drummer with Agent 5/9 band, is a volunteer firefighter with the Fairmount Township Fire Department.

Firefighters responded about 10 p.m. to a shed fire in the 16000 block of Linwood Road on property owned by Joseph Chilson, according to the sheriff’s report. In addition to Fairmount, firefighters from Sherman Township and Bonner Springs also fought the blaze.

A wood-burning stove is blamed for the fire, the report said. A television, stereo and Harley-Davidson motorcycle also were damaged; no damage estimate was listed.

DeSoto teen-agers injured in one-vehicle accident

Three 16-year-olds were injured in a one-car accident at 1:59 a.m. Sunday in DeSoto.

The car, a 1999 Chevy Malibu driven by Andrew Thornbrew, was westbound on 83rd Street when it struck a tree just west of Peoria Road.

Kyle Andrews, the front seat passenger, was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan., said Lt. Charles Black of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department. Andrews was listed in critical condition Monday night.

Thornbrew and the back seat passenger, Nathan Bruns, were taken to Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Their conditions were not available. Black said there were no signs of alcohol and the accident was still under investigation.

“The rear seat passenger was the only one wearing a seat belt,” he said.

Pigs reported missing at farm

Douglas County Sheriff’s officers are looking for five baby pigs that disappeared from their pens at a farm.

The pigs were reported missing Saturday by owner, Terri Schwager, 35. Sheriff’s officers said they do not know how the pigs were taken from the farm in the 1800 section of North 1100 Road.

Four are described as Durocs raised for show and bred from artificial insemination. A fifth pig was described as a red pig with a black belt-like marking. They are valued at $1,500. Two Durocs disappeared about Jan. 15. Two more pigs were missing near the end of January. The fifth pig was missing Thursday.
