Payne services

Services for William E. Payne, 76, Lawrence, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Ninth Street Baptist Church. Military graveside services will be at Leavenworth National Cemetery.

Mr. Payne died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.

He was born April 2, 1925, in Boonville, Mo., the son of Jasper and Ellen (Harris) Payne. He had lived in Lawrence since 1928.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a retired foreman and supervisor at the Lawrence Paper Company and also worked as a houseman at the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

He was a member of the Ninth Street Baptist Church and had been the chairman of the Deacon Board. He also was an honorary member of Sigma Phi Epsilon.

He married Daphne Thierry Harris Aug. 25, 1984, in Kansas City, Kan. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include three daughters, Zelcia Austin, Kansas City, Mo., Valarie Payne, Kansas City, Mo., and Paula Payne, Dallas; two sons, Ronald, Dallas, and William, Minneapolis, Minn.; two stepdaughters, April Harris Bremby, Lawrence, and Stacy Harris Jones, Annapolis, Md.; a brother, Alex, Topeka; a sister, Anna Harris, Dallas; seven grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Ninth Street Baptist Church.
