Plan ahead when choosing Medicare plan

How do we find out what kind of Medicare coverage is available in our area? HMOs are joining and going out, and we’re confused. Also, how do we compare a Medicare HMO, if one is available, with the Medigap policies for sale?

It’s a confusing area. Let me offer you a couple of possible options: Recently Medicare added a feature to their Web site titled “Personal Plan Finder” tool. This tool allows Medicare beneficiaries to quickly identify and compare Medicare health plan options that are available in their area based on answers to a short series of questions. Besides original-fee-for-service Medicare, some areas have Medicare managed care plans available based on the managed care plans decision as to where to offer their health plan. If managed care plans decide to offer their services to Medicare beneficiaries, they contract with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the federal agency.

Consumers who visit www.medicare.gov and the “Personal Plan Finder” tool, by typing in their zip code, can get a general/basic report of all of the health plan options available in their area. Also, consumers can get more detailed information about each Medicare health plan so that they can compare all their options in order to make the best health plan choice for their needs. Viewers can compare benefits offered, premium costs, etc., just by answering a few short questions.

Consumers can also receive information on programs to help with health care costs by answering additional questions about income and financial resources. These are called the Medicare Savings Programs, and the qualification questions can be answered without giving one’s name.

Those without Internet access can use the “Personal Plan Finder” tool by speaking with a customer service representative at 1-800-MEDICARE, (1-800-633-4227), or for the hearing and speech impaired, call TTY/TDD 1-877-486-2048. By responding to questions over the phone, consumers can receive a personalized summary in the mail. Answers to the questions are confidential and destroyed once the order for the summary is complete.

In addition to the Medicare information, there is a great program in Kansas offered through the Insurance Commissioner’s Office called Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas (SHICK). Well-trained volunteers in many locations can answer your Medicare, Medicaid or insurance questions. These volunteers are not trying to sell you a product. They will just provide you with the latest information.

To locate a SHICK counselor in your area, call the state office, 1-800-860-5260.
