Ames, Iowa ? Iowa State women’s basketball coach Bill Fennelly made a quick exit from Columbia, Mo., last Wednesday night.

The Cyclones had played poorly in a 62-52 triumph over Missouri and Fennelly wanted nothing more than to head out of town.

“It was one of those nights where I told them to get dressed and let’s go before they make us play some more,” Fennelly said.

Fennelly is expecting a better performance tonight when the Cyclones play host to Kansas, the Big 12 Conference cellar-dweller and a team in danger of becoming the first ever to go winless during a Big 12 Conference season.

Tipoff will be 7:05 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum. The game will be broadcast on the Jayhawk Radio Network.

Kansas has only two more opportunities to avoid an 0-16 league season  tonight and in the home finale next Tuesday night against Texas.

Kansas hasn’t played since last Sunday when the Jayhawks bowed to Kansas State, 65-40, in front of a crowd of more than 11,000  most of them KSU fans  in Allen Fieldhouse.

That score was similar to the last time KU played Iowa State. Kansas and ISU met 21*2 weeks ago in Allen Fieldhouse and the Cyclones posted a 75-50 victory after nursing a 30-28 halftime lead.

It’s possible Kansas and Iowa State could meet again in the Big 12 postseason tournament. Kansas is already assured of the No. 12 seed and will play the No. 5 seed at 2:30 p.m. on March 5 in Kansas City’s Municipal Auditorium.

Iowa State and Texas are tied for fifth place in conference standings with 8-6 records.

Kansas, 5-22 overall and mired in a 14-game losing streak, hasn’t won since ripping Morgan State, 88-53, on Dec. 29, 2001, in the consolation game of the St. Joseph’s, Pa. Classic. Morgan State’s record is 1-23.

During its 14-game slide, the Jayhawks have shot 34.7 percent from the field, 27.2 percent from three-point range, 65.3 percent from the free-throw line and have been outscored by an average of 71.5 to 51.3.
