Highway-naming bill approved by Senate

A bill naming highways to honor a former legislative leader and military veterans won unanimous Senate approval Wednesday.

The 40-0 vote returns the measure to the House, which approved a different version last month.

Under the bill, U.S. Highway 169 in Allen County would be designated the Robert V. Talkington Highway.

Talkington, from Iola, served 20 years in the Legislature. He also served on the Kansas Turnpike Authority and was a member of the state Board of Regents.

U.S. Highway 83, which runs through Oberlin, Oakley, Garden City and Liberal, would become the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Highway. Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas have already applied the same designation to U.S. 83.
