Free tax-preparation assistance in Lawrence is about to get even faster.

E-filing services are being added to AARP’s Tax Counseling for the Elderly program, which helps people prepare and file their taxes from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Lawrence Senior Center, 745 Vt.

Until this week, technical problems had prevented program volunteers from filing returns electronically. But volunteer David Longhurst lined up some help:

l LaserLogic repaired a laser printer at the center, to handle printouts of e-filed returns. Owner John Ross also donated printer rollers for the rest of tax season.

l Patrick Knorr, general manager of Sunflower Broadband, agreed to donate a router, cabling and network cards to get the center’s computer lab connected with an existing network.

l Geeks on Wheels employees supervisor Terry Moore and technicians Jason Everly and Greg Thomas volunteered to install the equipment.

Volunteers trained through the IRS and AARP already have handled at least 100 returns at the center, and adding e-filing services should help the program stay ahead of last year’s pace, said Jack Connolly, who coordinates the local program.

“This is great for us,” he said.
