A 6-year-old girl was returned to her parents after there had been charges of child abuse. However, the court said it would keep a close watch on the child’s progress and would not hesitate to remove her from the home if there was any further evidence of mistreatment. This was regarded as one of the earliest formal cases of its kind on record in the area.

IN 1962

Lawrence and the nation were celebrating the notable space venture of astronaut John Glenn Jr., who had orbited the earth three times and landed safely in the Atlantic Ocean. He received personal congratulations from President John F. Kennedy. Staff members at Kansas University lauded the feat as a major breakthrough in the space race with Russia.
