LaFrentz open to Knicks trade

? Nick Van Exel is hoping to be “Knick” Van Exel by Thursday night. Raef LaFrentz, his taller, less controversial Denver teammate, wasn’t as forthcoming. But LaFrentz, high on New York general manager Scott Layden’s wish list, didn’t sound opposed to a move east.

“New York is a team with a lot of talent,” LaFrentz said Sunday before playing the Nets. “For whatever reason, they’re not having the best season. I think I could be a good fit with them along with a lot of other teams. I don’t know the guys on that team well enough to really know what the situation would be like.”

Layden continues his pursuit for a big man before Thursday’s trading deadline. The Knicks have been chasing the 6-foot-11 LaFrentz for two years.

Other teams that are interested in LaFrentz, a restricted free agent at the end of the season, include the Bucks, Pacers, Raptors, and Blazers.

“I’d say right now, from the people I’ve talked to, it looks like I’ll probably be staying. But anything can happen the last couple of days,” said LaFrentz, who is averaging 14.8 points, 7.4 rebounds and three blocks. “I’m not betting one way or the other.”
