Printmaking professor makes KU debut

Kansas University assistant professor of printmaking Yoonmi Nam, above, will participate in her first KU faculty show today through March 1. A recent addition to the KU art department, Nam comes to Lawrence following a year teaching at Washington University in St. Louis.

Though low-tech, the elements of her installation represent the core of printmaking.

“When something touches another surface and leaves a trace, that’s the part I’m excited about,” she said.

Nam produces her art by applying pigments to long pieces of textured plastic, overlaying that with a paper strip and then scooting along on top of them on a large cardboard shipping tube. She uses the weight of her body to aid in the transfer of the ink.

Gallery hours are 1 p.m.-4:30 p.m. Sunday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Wednesday, 8:30 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday and 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Friday.

An opening reception will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. today.
