KU Basketball Notebook: Tape does trick for Boschee again; Miles shines

If Jeff Boschee keeps this up, he might consider taping his left thumb every game for good luck.

Boschee, Kansas’ senior guard from Valley City, N.D., scored 21 points on 6-of-10 three-point shooting in the Jayhawks’ 87-72 victory over Baylor on Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse.

Former KU Great Jo Jo White acknowledges the KU crowd. White, who works in the Boston Celtics' front office, was introduced to the KU faithful in the first half.

He also hit six threes in Monday’s win at Texas, canning 12 of 23 threes in two games since spraining his nonshooting thumb eight days ago against Texas Tech.

“My shot just feels good. The left hand has nothing to do with shooting the ball except placing it on the hand so the ball doesn’t fall off,” said Boschee, who has worn tape ever since running into a screen versus the Red Raiders. “I was fortunate enough to knock some shots down early today.”

He scored 15 points the first half, sparking KU to its 40-36 halftime lead.

Guard Kirk Hinrich had an off day on offense with 11 points on 4-of-12 shooting. But Hinrich was all over Baylor’s Wendell Greenleaf defensively, holding the Bears’ second-leading scorer to two points on 1-of-10 shooting, including zero for six threes.

“I was just trying to get my hand up. I could tell he was frustrated in his shot,” Hinrich said.

“We tried to make him a focal point of our defense. We know he is that good,” KU coach Roy Williams said. “We started off with Kirk on him. Kirk did a good job getting his hand up.”

Officials: Stanley Reynolds, Gerry Pollard, Kerry Sitton. Attendance: 16,300.

Miles dandy: Aaron Miles had nine assists and has 19 in his last two games.

“I thought he had more than he was given credit for at Texas,” Williams said of Miles, who was credited with 10 in Austin. “He’s doing some nice things for us. He lets himself get a little winded, then his play slacks off on the defensive end of the floor.”

No pills for me: The Jayhawks have been taking some prescription flu antibiotics since Drew Gooden came down with the bug Thursday.

Hinrich hasn’t taken his medication yet.

“I have kind of always felt if nothing’s wrong with me I’m not gonna put any drugs in me,” he said.

Recruits: Three Oklahoma City, Okla., high schoolers attended the game on unofficial recruiting visits. Juniors J.R. Giddens (6-foot-5) and Adam Liberty (6-1) hail from John Marshall High, while Darnell Jackson (6-8) is a soph at Northwest Classen High.

Jo Jo loves ovation: Former Kansas great Jo Jo White, now in the front office of the Boston Celtics, received a thunderous ovation when introduced to the crowd during a timeout.

He’s in town visiting his daughter, a KU student.

“It was fantastic. I almost pulled off my clothes and started to play,” White quipped.

White works in marketing and public relations with the Boston Celtics. He’s also part of the NBA team’s basketball operations team.

“I am kind of across the board. We’re talking of maybe even going to the bench. I’m going to take a look at it,” he said of perhaps coaching in the future. “As we go, I might end up on the bench.”

Collison strong: Nick Collison had 22 points and 10 boards. KU outboarded the Bears, 43-35, despite trailing 21-15 in that category at halftime.

“For a while, it didn’t seem like we had anybody on the boards and you need three or four,” Collison said. “The second half we did the things we need to do. We got a couple of extra boards.”

Of his production, he noted: “I felt before the game I had to step up and make plays especially with Drew not 100 percent, but I had foul trouble and had to sit,” he said of picking up two early fouls. “It was an ugly game. We were a little sloppy, not pretty like some other games. They had good defense, mixing up man and zone.

“But we have to be ready to play every game. If you are not ready to play in front of 16,300 fans there’s something wrong.”

KU can assure a share of the Big 12 title with a win at home Monday against Iowa State.

“If we can get at least a piece of it, that would be big,” Collison said.

Stats, facts: KU has won 16 straight regular-season conference games, breaking its own record for Big 12 wins over multiple seasons. Boschee scored his 1,400th career point, Gooden his 1,300th and Collison his 1,200th. Boschee recorded his 400th assist and hit his 300th career three-pointer.
