Jennifer Burns, registered physical therapist, has joined the staff at Neu Physical Therapy in Lawrence, 1305 Wakarusa Drive. She has four years of experience in physical therapy, and has attended a course on the neurodevelopmental technique for treatment of neurological diagnoses. Anj Riffel, Lawrence, is a new graphic designer at FryeAllen Inc., Topeka. She is responsible for creating concepts and production of print and Web site design. She previously was a senior artist at Sprint North, Kansas City, Mo. She has more than five years of corporate design experience.

Debi Waggoner, Lawrence, is the new branch manager of the Intrust Bank’s branch at 544 Columbia Drive in Lawrence. The Lawrence native has 30 years of banking experience.

Nationwide Floor and Window Coverings is offering its services in Douglas County and surrounding area. Mark and Linda Crider, owners of the new franchise, offer mobile, shop-at-home floor covering and window coverings service to residential and commercial clients. Lawrence graphic design firm Moore Media Creative Inc. has changed its name to TITUS: d Co.

Darren Moore, company president, said the name change was in response to a change in business and marketing plans.

The company began as Moore Media Creative in 1996 and continues to serve Lawrence and regional clients such as Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, Lawrence Convention and Visitors Bureau, Cottonwood Inc. and WEB Products. The company specializes in design for the Internet, advertising, print publication and packaging.

Shannon Abrahamson and Thomas Hepford, both of Lawrence, passed the two-day certified public accountant exam that was conducted in November. Passage of the exam is the first step to becoming a CPA.

Bartlett & West Engineers Inc. recently promoted Brian O’Keefe to survey crew chief and Roger Watson to senior designer.

O’Keefe supervises a survey crew operating out of Lawrence. He joined the company in December 2000 and has several years of survey experience.

Watson handles drafting and an increased load of design work. He has been with the firm since June 1999.

The company also hired Karen Weber as an administrator. She gained administrative experience while working for her previous employer.

Troy Kreutzer, Lawrence, has joined Lawrence Funeral Chapel. He is a licensed funeral director and embalmer, and has been in the profession since 1988. Kreutzer, a Lawrence resident since 1999, has worked for D.W. Newcomer’s Sons, Overland Park, and Gabriel’s Funeral Chapel, Georgetown, Tex.

Kansas Auctioneers Inc. recently conducted its 2002 Winter Convention in Garden City. Area residents elected to the Board of Directors for the association during the meeting were John Shoemaker, president elect, Tonganoxie; John Brugnoni, Leavenworth; Gary Siefert, Oskaloosa; and Richard Garvin, Topeka.

Area residents elected to the Board of Directors for the association’s auxiliary were Carolyn Edgecomb, vice president, Baldwin; and Deb Siefert, Oskaloosa.

Fund Administrative Services LLC, which is based in Salina, was selected in January as the administrator for USLife Income Fund Inc., a $50 million closed-end fund traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol UIF.

FAS provides principal offices for the fund and performs internal administrative and oversight services.

Among new members of the fund’s board of directors are Rich Barr, a 1959 Kansas University graduate from Phoenix, and Susan Ciciora, a KU graduate from Salina.

The fund’s board also recommended hiring Stewart Horejsi, a 1959 KU graduate and resident of Paradise Valley, Ariz., and Barbados, as fund adviser. Horejsi is a board member of the Kansas University Endowment Association

The Topeka-based Sunflower Foundation: Health Care for Kansans announced appointments to the organization’s Community Advisory Committee: Karen Seals, Lawrence; Rochelle Chronister, Neodesha; Lynn Mitchelson, Kansas City, Kan.; Margaret Myers, Hutchinson; Verna Rundell, Syracuse; Dale Sprague, McPherson; Anita Strnad, Munden; Sandra Vader, Shawnee Mission; and Oren Windholz, Hays.

The Sunflower Foundation was created in 2000 with $75 million in proceeds from a settlement between the Kansas Attorney General, the Kansas Insurance Department and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas to resolve Blue Cross’ charitable obligations to the state. The foundation’s mission is to serve as a catalyst for improving the health of Kansans. The philanthropy expects to announce its first-year program guidelines and funding opportunities in March.

Honors and awards

Harold Pearce, branch manager at the Lawrence office of Raymond James Financial Services Inc., has been named to the firm’s 2002 President’s Council in recognition of outstanding client service and exemplary professional growth.

Pearce joined Raymond James in 1986, and has more than 15 years of experience in the financial services industry. He offers investment and financial planning alternatives for individuals and businesses. Pearce may be reached at 841-9516.

Angela Drake has been named Employee of the Quarter at Cottonwood Inc., Lawrence. She was nominated for the award by her co-workers.

Drake is a case manager in the Support Services Department, coordinating services for persons with developmental disabilities. Her responsibilities include acting as an advocate, providing consistency and support for individuals making transitions in life and work, lending assistance in finding services in the community and accessing the benefits to which individuals are entitled. She has worked for Cottonwood since 1993.

Steven Douglass , chairman and chief executive officer of Payless ShoeSource Inc., Topeka, was named “Executive of the Year” during a Feb. 12 banquet organized by the Topeka chapter of Sales and Marketing Executives International.

Douglass joined Payless in 1993 after working 17 years for May Department Stores Co.

The Topeka chapter of Sales and Marketing Executives has selected Lori Keegan as “Executive of the Month.” Keegan is president and CEO of Transition By Design Inc., a career and business strategies company that she founded in 1998.

Keegan recently opened a second office in Overland Park.

API Foils Inc., a worldwide manufacturer and distributor of hot-stamping foils, was recognized during the Gold Leaf Awards, presented annually by the Foil Stamping and Embossing Assn. to recognize excellence in the use of foil.

API Foils took third place in the Calendar Category for its 2001 calendar featuring a design that appears to have been painted with different colors of foil.

The company also shares the Best of Show award and first place in the Self-promotional Materials Category with Graphic Converting and Universal Engraving. API Foils’ entry, titled “Release Your Imagination,” is a portfolio of graphic effects that can be achieved using foil, embossing and die cutting.

The winning entries were designed by The Williams Group, a Lawrence marketing firm. Graphic designers were Annie Tichenor and Shala Stevenson, both of Lawrence.

Overland Park-based Yellow Transportation, a division of Yellow Corp., announced that its Web site MyYellow.com received three major technology services honors.

The company was picked by eWeek in a review of more than 10,000 companies for its “Fast Rack 500” list. The publication ranks companies that use Web sites to connect with customers, suppliers and other partners.

The MyYellow.com site was recognized with a “Standard of Excellence” award from the Web Marketing Assn. for its success in creating and maintaining outstanding Web design and content.

The site also was named to the 2001 NetMarketing 200: Best B-to-B Web sites, a list published by B-to-B magazine. The site was chosen for exhibiting the latest in online technology.

The Lawrence Chamber of Commerce has scheduled the following ribbon-cutting ceremonies:

l The Home Show, Lawrence Home Builders Assn., 11:30 p.m., Friday, Building 21 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds, 21st and Harper streets.

Lawn care professionals are invited to attend a free educational seminar from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Kansas University’s Edwards Campus, 12600 Quivira Road., Overland Park.

The seminar will provide lawn care business owners with tools and information to operate more effectively. It will consist of four presentations from area professionals. An open forum will allow professionals to express their own opinions on issues affecting the green industry.

Larry Ryan, president of Ryan Lawn and Tree, will discuss how to create a company image. Jeff Morrow, a Kansas University lecturer, will present a hands-on business evaluation session. Gary Vontz, president of National Car System, will outline information on leasing, financing and purchasing of commercial equipment. Lucas Krump, president of Yard Barber Lawn Services, will discuss the issues facing the lawn care industry.

Glen Barton, chairman and chief executive officer of Caterpillar Inc., will give a presentation, “From Small Town America to International Business,” at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Room 100 of Henderson Learning Resources Center on the Washburn University campus in Topeka.

The event is free and open to the public.

Barton will be honored during a series of events Tuesday and Wednesday at Washburn.
