Police chase through city ends in arrest

Several charges were filed Thursday against a man accused of leading Lawrence Police on a car chase that ended south of Eudora after the man allegedly fled on foot into a field when his car struck a culvert.

Leonard W. Landrum, 26, 112 N. First Terrace, Baldwin, late Thursday was in Douglas County Jail charged with fleeing and attempting to elude police, driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, obstruction of justice, and failing to stop at a stop sign. His bond was set at $3,500.

About 2:20 a.m. Thursday, a patrol officer attempted to stop a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle after the driver allegedly failed to signal a turn and drove through a stop sign near Fifth and Mississippi streets, Sgt. Mike Pattrick said.

The officer pursued the car south on Mississippi Street and lost sight of it, Pattrick said. A second patrol officer spotted the car and attempted to stop it near 13th and Massachusetts streets, Pattrick said.

The chase continued east on Kansas Highway 10 with the driver entering the westbound lanes headed eastbound from the Noria Road exit, Pattrick said. Speeds were in excess of the 70-mph speed limit.

At County Road 1061 the Chevelle left K-10 and headed south, Pattrick said. The Chevelle’s engine began smoking and the car struck a culvert near the intersection with North 1000 Road 3 miles south of Eudora, Pattrick said.

The driver then tried to flee on foot but was caught by officers in a nearby field, Pattrick said.

Landrum is scheduled to appear in court again at 2 p.m. Tuesday before Douglas County Judge Robert Fairchild.
