“The Douglas County Historic Building Survey” published by the county bicentennial commission in connection with the national bicentennial observance was proving to be a big seller here.

IN 1962

A novel petition for sidewalk construction in the Opal Jayne Kennedy School area was approved by the city commission. Petitioners in the region were seeking approval of a plan to have more than 350 property owners in the affected area to pay equal amounts for the sidewalks. Up to then, payments were made in proportion to the amount of land owned. Most neighbors seemed amenable to the new plan.

IN 1902

On Feb. 14, 1902, the Lawrence Journal wrote, “St. Valentine’s day, which came today, was signalized with more than the usual number of sentimental messages from lover to sweetheart and vice versa. The assertion that the practice of sending cards of serious or comic aspect to friends, anonymously or otherwise, on Valentine Day is on the wane, is disproved by the sales made this year. Wholesale dealers began to experience a heavy demand for their goods a month ago, and at this time the supply practically was exhausted … It is the mail carrier more than any other who dislikes the coming of Valentine’s Day. He was the bearer of many a happy greeting, but the pleasure found in being the medium between lover and loved was discounted by the hardness of the task.”
