Allen pondering ISU offer
Former KU coach may become Cyclone assistant
Former Kansas University football coach Terry Allen and his staff have had mixed results landing new positions since being dismissed.
Things might be looking up for Allen, though.
KU’s former head coach, who was let go with three games remaining last season, reportedly has been offered a job as Iowa State’s tight ends coach. ISU coach Dan McCarney said he also likely would give Allen the title of associate head coach.
“We’re looking at it,” Allen told the Ames (Iowa) Tribune. “We’re trying to figure some things out. We haven’t done anything yet. I don’t know that we will yet.”
KU coach Mark Mangino retained two of Allen’s aides, Clint Bowen and Travis Jones the former to coach a to-be-determined position and the latter to continue working with the defensive line.
Former KU wide receivers coach Clarence James will hold the same position at Southern Methodist, while Rob Bolks returned to Northern Iowa to be the secondary coach.
Tom Hayes and Rip Scherer, who served as Allen’s defensive and offensive coordinators respectively, still are seeking new jobs.
Hayes, who was the interim head coach following Allen’s firing, was believed to have been a candidate to be defensive coordinator at Clemson and an assistant with the New Orleans Saints. Scherer was approached by Arkansas State to be head coach, but declined.
Four other former aides Johnny Barr, Tim Burke, Jay Johnson and Sam Pittman haven’t hooked up with new teams yet.
