Ottawa senior scores 19 in win

— Ottawa High senior Katie Sheffield broke out of her scoreless slump with 19 points in a 69-59 girls basketball victory over Kansas City Ward on Monday in the OHS gym.

Sheffield, who hadn't scored in Ottawa's past two games, hit four three-pointers and also dished nine assists.

"Katie was a little frustrated the last couple of games and we stayed out there about 45 minutes the last two nights after practice shooting," Ottawa coach Cliff McCullough said. "I think she broke out of it."

Jayme Vance added 16 points for the Cyclones (15-1 overall, 6-0 Huron League), and Lindsey Dieterich added 14. Liz Burks had 10 assists for the second straight game.

Ottawa, ranked No. 3 in the Class 4A coaches' poll, will travel to Kansas City to face KC Sumner tonight.

Baldwin  Baldwin defeated Gardner-Edgerton for the third time this season thanks to the inside play of Emily Brown and Casey Millstein.

"They were much improved than the previous two times we played them," said BHS coach Eric Toot, whose squad has won nine in a row. "We got off to a big lead and they challenged us to the end but our post players were able to control the inside."

Brown scored 17 points and Millstein added 12. Jodie Bacon scored 11 for Baldwin in the Frontier League contest.

The Bulldogs (13-2) will travel today to Spring Hill to face the No. 1-ranked Broncos today.

Basehor  SFT held Basehor-Linwood to six or fewer points in three quarters, including two points in the final period.

"It was a great win for us," SFT coach Brenda Dahl said. "We played a pretty darn good three quarters."

Melissa Ball scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the No. 2-ranked Chargers (15-1). Janelle Arnold added 14 points.

"Janelle Arnold had a great game for us," Dahl said, "and did some individual things we've been wanting her to do. She had a good game offensively."

Santa Fe Trail will play host to Tonganoxie on Friday.
