KU’s Russell honored by Big 12 Conference

Kansas University’s Scott Russell, who set the NCAA weight-throw record on Friday, was named Monday as the Big 12 Conference’s Track and Field Athlete of the Week.

Russell threw 81 feet, 114 inches in the Iowa State Classic on Friday, breaking the old record of 78-612 by Tore Johnsen of Texas-El Paso. It is the second time this season the Big 12 has honored Russell, a Windsor, Ontario, native and defending Big 12 Indoor champion.

Kansas State distance runner Amy Mortimer was the league’s female athlete of the week.
