— Kansas City Piper outscored Perry-Lecompton 9-5 in overtime to escape with a 64-60 overtime Kaw Valley League boys basketball victory on Monday.

Perry's Aaron Swaggerty hit a three-pointer at the regulation buzzer to force overtime, but Piper controlled the extra period.

"We wanted to win badly, but we fought one of the best teams in the state tooth and nail," Kaws coach Pat Hupfauf said. "We feel like we can pay about anybody tough. We're discouraged we lost but we're upbeat that we're a competitive team."

Shawn Howard led the Kaws with 15 points. Swaggerty finished with 14 points. Jared Swafford added 13 and Justin Zimmerman scored 12.

The Kaws (7-9) will travel to Basehor today to play Basehor-Linwood.
