Book designs displayed at University Press

The 2001 Association of American University Presses Book, Jacket and Journal Show will be on display today through Feb. 24 at the University Press of Kansas, 2501 W. 15th St.

The exhibit can be seen from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Each visitor will receive a free copy of the show catalog containing design specifications and juror’s comments.

The exhibit features 49 books, 26 jackets and covers, and one journal. The books are divided into the categories of typographic, illustrated, reference and poetry and literature.

Worlds of Fun slates auditions in Lawrence

Worlds of Fun is looking for entertainers and technicians for its 2002 season.

Auditions are from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday in the Kansas Room in the Kansas Union at Kansas University.

Singers should prepare one verse and the chorus of an up-tempo song and a ballad. Dancers should perform a jazz routine of no longer than two minutes and sing one song. A CD player, cassette deck and piano will be provided. Performers must provide their own accompaniment.

Individual instrumentalists should prepare two selections of contrasting styles. Drummers should bring a snare drum and cymbal.

Resumes for nonperforming positions, such as stage managers, costume personnel and sound/lighting engineers, will be accepted at the auditions or can be mailed to Live Entertainment Auditions, Worlds of Fun, 4545 Worlds of Fun Ave., Kansas City, Mo. 64161.

Woodwind players list spring lineup

The Lawrence Woodwind Quintet and CottonWood Winds have planned a busy spring.

The Lawrence Woodwind Quintet will perform at 1 p.m. Thursday at Riverside School; 9:30 a.m. Feb. 21 at Pinckney School; April 3 at Woodlawn School; April 17 at Sunflower School; and 10:40 a.m. May 18 at the Phi Beta Kappa ceremony in the Kansas Union at Kansas University.

The CottonWood Winds will play from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Helen Foresman Spencer Museum of Art and at 7:30 p.m. April 20 at the Free Dessert Concert at the Lawrence Jewish Community Center.

Members of the Lawrence Woodwind Quintet are Barbara Jones, oboe, Paul Jordan, clarinet; Sharon Learned, flute; Stuart Levine, French horn; and David Ruhlen, bassoon.

Members of the CottonWood Winds are Tim Burfeind, oboe; Alan Holland, clarinet; Learned, flute; Levine, French horn; and Sarah Dewein, bassoon.

Arts commission taking applications for grants

The Lawrence Arts Commission is taking applications for grants for visual, literary or performing arts. Grants of up to $500 are awarded based on project quality and benefits to Lawrence residents.

The grants are intended as “start-off money” and will not be awarded for ongoing projects. The grants support materials, publications, rent, education or other part-time needs. Funds will not be provided for capital improvements, fund raising, receptions, equipment, existing general operation budgets or salaries, travel, student projects for credit or projects previously funded by the arts commission.

Applications are available at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt.; the Lawrence Arts Center, 200 W. Ninth St.; City Hall, 6 E. Sixth St.; and at www.lawrenceks.org.

Applications must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. March 11 to the city manager’s office in City Hall.

Barn dance planned today at ECM

The Lawrence Barn Dance Assn. will have a family barn dance and potluck dinner today and March 10 at Ecumenical Christian Ministries, 1204 Oread Ave.

Today’s potluck starts at 4 p.m., and the dance begins at 5:30 p.m. Bring two food items, dinnerware, cups and a picnic blanket. Drinks are provided.

Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children ages 16 and younger.
