KU’s Russell sets NCAA record

? Kansas University’s Scott Russell broke the NCAA record in the weight throw and the KU women’s distance medley relay team provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships during the first day of the Iowa State Classic on Friday.

Russell, who recorded the top throw in NCAA history at the Jayhawk Invitational last weekend only to have the throw disqualified due to a technicality, had an even longer throw Friday 81 feet, 114 inches. The previous NCAA mark was 78-612 by Texas-El Paso’s Tore Johnsen.

For the KU women, the distance medley relay team of Katy Eisenmenger, Stacy Keller, Laura Lavoie and Monique Peters finished in third place with a time of 11:32.90. The time provisionally qualifies the group for the NCAA Championships and ranks them second in the Jayhawk record books.

Additionally, Leo Bookman set a school record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.57.

The Iowa State Classic will conclude today.
