Santa Fe Trail girls dump DeSoto

? If last week’s ice storm never passed through Kansas and school hadn’t been canceled, things might have been a heck of a lot different for DeSoto on Thursday night.

Santa Fe Trail, ranked No. 3 in the Class 4A coaches’ poll, stormed to a 41-27 Kaw Valley League makeup victory over the Wildcats in the SFT gym. The game originally was scheduled for Jan. 29 but postponed because of inclement weather.

DeSoto missed having point guard Ashley Carlson, sidelined with a knee injury.

“I’m not saying having her would have let us win, but it would have helped,” DeSoto coach Dwight Spencer said. “She means more to this team than just her basketball skills. She’s a leader.”

Chargers coach Brenda Dahl found out Carlson would not play shortly before tipoff.

“I don’t think she scored when we played them the first time,” Dahl said of Carlson. “But she did a lot of other things that helped her team with her ball handling, running the floor and her leadership.”

Carlson’s absence was noticeable as the Wildcats failed to move the ball well and managed just three baskets in the first half. SFT, now 13-1, led 19-8 at halftime.

“We’ve had a hard time scoring from time to time this year,” Spencer said. “We have a lot of girls who are capable of scoring, but just one true scorer Allie Heinen.”

Heinen, a sophomore forward, was held scoreless in the first half and finished with 10 points. She scored eight points in the final four minutes when the game was out of reach.

“We’re typically a very good defensive team,” Dahl said. “We did a good job on them, especially in the first half.”

SFT freshman guard Lindsay Boss scored a game-high 14 points. SFT senior guard Janell Arnold added nine points.

“We like to run the floor,” Dahl said. “We didn’t finish a lot of the times, but we did a pretty good job getting the ball down when we needed to.”

SFT will play host to Mill Valley tonight. The Jaguars defeated Perry-Lecompton on Tuesday for the first win in program history.
