FSHS girls rock SM East, 57-47

? Free State High’s girls basketball team won its second straight game on Thursday, stopping SM East, 57-47, at the Lancers’ gym.

Lauren Wright hit four three-pointers and scored 19 points, while Stacie Garland had 13 points and four rebounds. Playing with a broken nose, Jayme Lisher contributed nine points.

The Firebirds, who led 15-5 after one quarter and 32-18 at halftime, had just eight turnovers total.

“When you execute your offense and make shots, it’s a matter of all five coming together like they did tonight,” Free State coach Craig Hershiser said. “We were ahead at the outset.

“We shot a great percentage and spread the ball quite a bit. We were able to dictate the tempo of the game by being very patient on offense and having pretty good shot selection. We did a nice job taking care of the ball. We had eight turnovers all night and they pressed us the second half.”

Wright’s threes helped quite a bit.

“When Lauren hits three, four or five a night like she is, it’s a big momentum swing. The kids get charged up over the kind of thing,” Wright said. “It’s nice to get two kids in double figures with Lauren scoring 19 and Stacie 13,” he added. “I would describe it as a great effort in which the kids played well together. We need to give credit to Amber Hinton who played a lot of minutes because of Jayme’s injury. She rebounded and defended effectively.”

FSHS will play Tuesday at Shawnee Mission South.
