Duke stomps Florida State in rematch

Blue Devils make up for only loss with 31-point victory over Seminoles

? After its worst half of the season, No. 1 Duke just went with the flow.

Mike Dunleavy scored 20 points, Dahntay Jones added 18 and the Blue Devils shot 60 percent in the second half to get revenge on Florida State with an 80-49 victory Thursday night.

Florida State's Anthony Richardson, right, loses the ball while trying to drive on Duke's Dahntay Jones. Duke won Thursday night at Durham, N.C.

Many believed the Blue Devils (21-1, 9-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) would roll over a team that gave them their only loss a month ago. But that was far from the case as the Seminoles (10-11, 3-7) made Duke look more like an NCAA Tournament bubble team than contender to defend its national title most of the night.

Then came a closing 36-11 run.

“We figured out we were just going to have to play by instinct,” Dunleavy said. “We ran in transition and when we didn’t have something we pulled it out and made plays.

“We didn’t run one play in the second half, and that was the difference. For the first time all year on offense we were taken back by how we couldn’t score. But we settled down and got it done.”

One Florida State fan even brought a broom to Cameron Indoor Stadium in case the Seminoles knocked off the nation’s top team for the second time.

But that may have been asking too much from a .500 club that shot 29 percent in the second half.

“I told our guys that Duke comes at you for 40 minutes and you’ve got to be able to attack back, and when you attack back you’ve got to score,” Florida State coach Steve Robinson said. “If you don’t score they can put such a barrage on you.”

Duke, which won its ninth straight by double figures since the 77-76 road loss on Jan. 6, got its first 10-point lead with 13:57 left.

Then the Blue Devils got some additional breathing room minutes later as Dunleavy hit a baseline jumper, a three-pointer and a driving slam in a 12-0 run for a 56-38 lead and the rout was on.

Florida State changed defenses and used its athletic ability to turn Duke’s powerful offense into a walking turnover. Many Duke players shook their heads and showed frustration as an offense that averages 91.5 points a game bogged down until the final run.

All-American guard Jason Williams had one of his worst shooting games of the season. The ACC scoring leader had seven points.

That was nothing compared to Monte Cummings of Florida State, who averages a team-leading 15.6 points but was held to one point.

No. 9 Gonzaga 84, Santa Clara 69

Santa Clara, Calif. Dan Dickau scored 22 points for Gonzaga, which has won sixth straight games and 18 of 19. Zach Gourde scored 16 points and Cory Violette added 14 for Gonzaga (21-3, 8-1 West Coast Conference), which scored 15 of the game’s final 22 points.

Kyle Bailey had 22 of his career-high 30 points in the second half for Santa Clara (9-13, 4-5), which got within 59-54 with 11:11 left on a three-pointer by Justin Holbrook.

Bailey’s fourth three-pointer of the second half, with 5:40 left, cut Gonzaga’s lead to 69-62. But Dickau hit 3-pointers on the next two possessions, leading a 10-0 run that put the game away.

No. 11 Arizona 91, Washington 82

Tucson, Ariz. Salim Stoudamire had 14 of his 17 points in the second half and Jason Gardner scored 11 of his 13 in the final 20 minutes for the Wildcats (16-6, 9-3 Pac-10).

Doug Wrenn had a career-high 35 points for the Huskies (8-14, 2-10), who rallied from a 19-point deficit to get within seven in the final nine minutes but lost their third straight.

Luke Walton had 21 points for Arizona, just four in the second half.

No. 20 Stanford 90, No. 13 Oregon 87, OT

Stanford, Calif. Casey Jacobsen had 41 points and he and Curtis Borchardt combined to make five free throws during the final two minutes of overtime to lift Stanford over Oregon. It was the second time in three games Jacobsen scored at least 40 points. Stanford (14-6, 7-4 Pac-10) was 8-of-11 from the foul line in the overtime. Borchardt had 24 points, 15 rebounds and five blocked shots for the Cardinal.

Frederick Jones matched his career-high with 36 points as the Ducks (17-6, 9-3) had their three-game winning streak snapped. Oregon lost to a ranked opponent for the first time this season.

No. 21 Illinois 68, Michigan 60

Ann Arbor, Mich. Brian Cook scored 19 points, including his team’s first dozen, and Illinois snapped a three-game losing streak.

The Illini (16-7, 5-5 Big Ten) won in an opponent’s gym for the first time this season by overcoming a 13-point first-half deficit and another lackluster effort from Frank Williams, who scored 10 points.

Leon Jones led the Wolverines (9-11, 4-6) with 14 points. Illini outscored Michigan 11-3 over the final few minutes.
