Eloise Appleby Franken

Shawnee, Okla. Mass of Christian Burial for Eloise Appleby Franken, 92, Shawnee, will be at noon today at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Shawnee. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Shawnee.

Mrs. Franken died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at her home.

She was born May 29, 1909, in Springfield, Mo., the daughter of Edgar H. and Ophelia (Ferrell) Appleby.

Mrs. Franken earned a teacher’s certificate from Southwest Missouri State College. She taught kindergarten at Wilson and Franklin schools, both in Shawnee. She also taught music and reading at St. Benedict Catholic School, Shawnee. She taught at a kindergarten funded by the Junior Service League, a forerunner to Head Start.

She was a member of Junior Service League, Shawnee, for more than 50 years. She was a member of the altar society at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church for more than 60 years. She also was a member of Sponsa Regis at the church for many years.

She married Ed A. “Dink” Franken in June 1934, in Billings, Mo. He died in November 1977.

Survivors include two daughters, Andy Moyer, Seminole, Okla., and Betsy Evans, Lawrence; a son, Tony Franken, Iowa City, Iowa; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Three grandchildren died earlier.
