Public offered a say on floodplain planning

People concerned about future development in area floodplains will have the chance to make comments Monday to the planning committee studying the issue.

The Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission’s floodplain review committee tentatively agreed Friday that for the first time it would give members of the public a chance to address concerns.

Committee members Friday said the session would be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at City Hall. Speakers will be given eight to 10 minutes to make their presentations.

Those who wish to speak must contact the planning office in advance by calling 832-3150 or e-mail cfolkmann@ci.lawrence.ks.us.

Committee members did discuss the latest set of changes to the regulations. The latest proposal would not only regulate the county’s floodplain area as defined by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, but also would include additional property along the fringes of that area.
