Southwest Missouri State honors Stiles

? The No. 10 jersey Jackie Stiles made famous while becoming the leading scorer in NCAA women’s college basketball history will never again be worn by a Southwest Missouri State player.

The university retired Stiles’ jersey during halftime at Saturday night’s game between Drake and Southwest Missouri.

The near-capacity crowd of about 8,800 people gave Stiles a thunderous ovation as a banner with a replica of her maroon-and-white jersey was carried onto the floor.

Stiles is the third SMS women’s player to have her jersey hoisted into the rafters at Hammons Center, joining Jeanette Tendai (1983-86) and Melody Howard (1991-94).

“It’s definitely going to be one of my most memorable achievements,” Stiles said.

That’s something. The 23-year-old from Claflin scored an NCAA record 3,393 career points and led the Bears to the Final Four her senior season. She was a three-time Missouri Valley player of the year. Stiles was a WNBA All-Star a a rookie last summer.
