Plays take a look at life in Asia and Africa

“Beyond American Freedom and Justice,” a series of readings of contemporary plays from Asia and Africa, will run through May 8. The readings are from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt., unless noted otherwise.

The plays are “I, Unseen” by Marika Mashburn, a play about Afghan women under Taliban rule, Feb. 19; “Ubu and the Truth Commission” a script by Alfred Jarry about post-apartheid South Africa, time to be announced, Feb. 21-22, Hall Center for the Humanities, Kansas University; “Othello in Wonderland” Gholanhoseyn Sa’edi’s script about the confrontation between Iranian intelligentsia and the Islamic regime under Ayatollah Khomeini, March 11; “Conversation with the Giant Buddha,” a one-act play by Youssef Kohzad about an interview with a giant Buddha statue as the Taliban prepare to demolish it, April 3; “Alia, the Wounds of Serambi Mekkah,” a play by Ratna Sarumpaet that explores sexual violence in an Islamic context, April 17; and “The Path” by Walid Ikhlasi, about a Syrian actor who attempts to walk in a society dominated by hypocrisy and oppression, May 8.
