Ralph James Dyer

He was born Dec. 27, 1909, in rural Douglas County, the son of Albert Henry and Maude Elsie (Ferguson) Dyer. He grew up on a farm and attended Douglas County rural schools. In 1928, he moved with his family to a farm northeast of Ottawa near Centropolis.

As a young man, Mr. Dyer trained horses and mules in Kansas City, Mo., for Owen Brothers Company, which provided animals for the military. In the early 1950s, he worked for Hercules Powder Company at Sunflower Ordnance Depot, DeSoto. He worked at Fairlawn Construction Co., Topeka, in the late 1950s. In the early 1960s, he began work with the Franklin County Road and Bridge Department. He worked there until his retirement in 1975. Throughout much of his life, he was also a farmer and stockman on the family farm near Centropolis.

He married Charity Bird “Birdie” Stewart on Dec. 8, 1937, in Centropolis. She died Feb. 16, 1992.

Survivors include a son, Gene, rural Centropolis; a brother, Leland, Ottawa; a grandson; and two great-grandchildren.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. Monday at Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home, Ottawa, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.
