Lawrence resale shop to move, give psychic new life

A resale shop for maternity apparel and children’s clothes, toys and equipment is looking to double its weekend business by moving into a new home nearby.

Second Chance Children’s Clothing, 15 W. Ninth St., this weekend will move across the street to 847 Mass., the former home of Bowen’s Hallmark.

The new store will have a slightly smaller sales area, owner Amy Laughlin said, but will more than make up for that by offering more flexible space, about 2,000 square feet for basement storage and the visibility of a Massachusetts Street address.

“We just want to serve as much of the community as possible,” Laughlin said. “I’d just like to catch some of the people who come downtown to Mass. Street. I see baby carriages up and down the street, and a lot of times they don’t make it down my way.”

Laughlin plans to start moving today and reopen at the new location Monday morning, when she will resume buying clothes and other items from customers.

Moving into part of Second Chance’s vacated space will be the Lawrence Metaphysical Shop. The shop had opened on Massachusetts Street in 2000, then moved early last year to 1610 W. 23rd St. after an adjacent optometrist decided to expand.

Psychic purveyor Tina Lee who reads Tarot cards, examines past lives and offers spiritual healing and cleansing said she wished she never would have been forced to leave the central business district.

“Downtown is a much better environment of spiritual energy,” she said. “I feel that downtown is just better than a 23rd Street location.”
