Tulane wary of Warriors

Hawaii to put potent offense on display in bowl

? Tulane coach Chris Scelfo has watched enough tapes on Hawaii’s run-and-shoot offense to know his team has a tough task today.

The Green Wave (7-5) face the Warriors (10-3) and the nation’s top passing offense in the inaugural Hawaii Bowl.

“They’re confidence on offense is very high and they can operate as well as anyone we’ve seen all year,” Scelfo said.

Quarterback Timmy Chang is the key to Hawaii’s high-flying offense, which averages 387.9 yards per game passing and is No. 3 in total offense (500.8 yards).

Chang struggled through various injuries all season but still threw for 4,350 yards and 25 touchdowns. He also had 22 interceptions, including eight in the final two games.

“With Timmy back there, he’s got tremendous accuracy,” Scelfo said. “That’s where it all starts, with him. He’s done a great job with this system in a very short time.”

Chang will have to deal with Tulane’s Lynaris Elpheage, who emerged this season to become one of the top cornerbacks in the nation with eight interceptions.

Elpheage is part of a Green Wave defense that leads the nation with 40 forced turnovers.

“They’re tenacious and hardworking,” Chang said. “They don’t stop. They’ll keep coming at us. We just got to stay together, execute and try our best to stay focused on we got to do.”

Chang’s top target is Justin Colbert, but the Warriors have several other small and nimble receivers. Six Warriors had 100-yard receiving games this season.

“Everybody on their offense is a threat,” Elpheage said. “They have a great quarterback, that’s why they’re the No. 1 offense in the nation. It’s going to be a great challenge for our secondary.”

For the Green Wave, quarterback J.P. Losman has thrown for 2,228 yards and 19 touchdowns this season.

Tulane’s running game is led by Mewelde Moore, who broke the school’s 54-year-old career rushing mark this season. The junior had 1,022 yards rushing, giving him 3,333 yards in his career.
