Young Jayhawk women thumped by Kangaroos – UMKC 74, Kansas 62

? After playing like veterans in the season’s first four games, the Kansas University women’s basketball squad’s inexperience has been revealed.

Randi Meissner had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Katie Houlehan scored 17, helping UMKC defeat the young Jayhawks 74-62 on Saturday.

Freshmen Tamara Ransburg and Nichelle Roberts led the Jayhawks (4-4) with 14 points, but turnover disparity was the key.

Kansas racked up 26 giveaways to UMKC’s 16.

The turnover margin was even more glaring because of the Kangaroos’ shoddy shooting — UMKC made just 35.4 percent (23-of-65) of its shots, but attempted 19 more buckets than KU (46).

The Kangaroos (4-5) also outrebounded the Jayhawks 42-34. UMKC had 21 offensive rebounds — leading to 18 second-chance points — and scored 19 points off the Jayhawks’ turnovers.

The Kangaroos trailed 27-25 at halftime after shooting only 25 percent in the opening period.

Sophomore transfer Stacey Becker, playing her first game as a Jayhawk, scored zero points on 0-of-3 shooting. She had two assists and two turnovers.

Erica Hallman added 13 points and Aquanita Burras 12 for Kansas.

The Jayhawks are in action again on Saturday when they play host to Indiana-Purdue Indianapolis at 2 p.m. at Allen Fieldhouse.
