Top 25 men’s roundup: West lifts Xavier over BSU

? Those 12 NBA scouts eager to see David West could have showed up at halftime and not missed a thing.

West watched most of the first half from the bench because of two quick fouls, then made up for lost time and finished with a season-high 24 points as No. 21 Xavier beat Ball State 87-58 on Friday night.

A well-rested West repeatedly drove to the basket for dunks and layups as the Musketeers (6-2) blew open the game with a 23-6 run at the start of the second half.

West was held to four points in the first half. As soon as he got back on the floor, Ball State (5-4) was done.

“He’s not a guy you’re going to stop,” Ball State coach Tim Buckley said.

The Cardinals couldn’t even keep up. The 6-foot-9 power forward made 10 of his 11 shots from the field, all but one of them on moves to the basket. He also had nine rebounds and blocked a shot in only 20 minutes on the court.

“I don’t think I’ve sat that long since my freshman year,” said West, who picked up his second foul at 15:28 of the first half. “I knew once I got the second one, I was done for the first half.

“I just wanted to come out and play. I hadn’t been on the floor. At halftime, I jumped some rope and got loose.”

West also took turns guarding long-range shooter Chris Williams, who scored most of his 24 points after the game was out of reach.

A dozen NBA scouts showed up to see West make some moves and score some points. In the second half, he put on a show worthy of a potential first-round pick.

He scored 12 consecutive points in the first 3:31 of the second half, topping off his one-man run with a steal, drive and one-hand dunk that broke open the game. West scored 20 points in the second half.

“They were in some kind of matchup zone,” said point guard Lionel Chalmers, who had nine of Xavier’s 23 assists. “They were leaving the middle open, so that was the plan — attack. If you get him going early, he can get everyone else involved.”

No. 5 Oregon 107, Florida A&M 66

Eugene, Ore. — Luke Jackson had his second career triple-double with 14 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists as Oregon bounced back with a romp.

It was only the third triple-double in Ducks history. Ron Lee had the first in 1972 and Jackson had the second in 2001.

Luke Ridnour added 21 points for Oregon (7-1), which won its 21st consecutive game at home.
