Big 12 women: Kansas State rolls; Texas Tech cruises

? Kansas State’s starting point guard and 3-point specialist Laurie Koehn didn’t play Friday. But the rest of the Wildcats did good impressions of the Big 12 Conference’s leading 3-point shooter.

Five players took over for the injured Koehn as seventh-ranked Kansas State tied a school record with 15 3-pointers to beat Western Michigan 92-75.

The Wildcats (10-1) set the 3-point record in 2000, also against Western Michigan. The Wildcats shot 15-of-24 from behind the three-point arc.

“I’m so proud of the way we made adjustments,” coach Deb Patterson said. “Their ability to go with the system got them those looks and they were able to knock them down. We have players that can shoot. You are playing with fire.”

Megan Mahoney had 20 points and was 4-for-5 from beyond the arc, and teamed with Kendra Wecker to lead seventh-ranked Kansas State to its eighth straight home victory.

“We know that they can shoot the ball,” Western Michigan coach Ron Stewart said. “I was probably a little surprised that a couple shot it as well as they did. We rolled the dice a little and they responded.”

Western Michigan (4-3), which got 23 points from Kristin Koetsier, trimmed a growing deficit to eight points with 14:39 left.

Wecker scored five points in a 10-0 run that made it 63-45 with 11:49 remaining.

Wecker finished with 16 points as did Nicole Ohlde, who also had 12 rebounds. Chelsea Domenico had 14 on 4-of-9 shooting from 3-point range, and Amy Dutmer added 12 for Kansas State. She was 4-for-4 on 3-pointers.

Wecker added nine assists.

“I was really pleased to see the contributions by our bench,” Patterson said. “This was a night when we needed our bench to step up.”

Curleta Harris added 18 points, Casey Rost 14, and Lori Crisman 13 for the Broncos. Maria Jilian had 12 assists for Western Michigan.

The Broncos led 19-17 with 11:47 left in the first half before the Wildcats got going. The Wildcats took a four-point lead then rattled off 14 straight to lead 43-25 with 1:35 remaining in the first half.

“They were aggressive and scrappy,” Domenico said.

Koehn, averaging 15.7 points, injured her ankle in practice earlier this week. Patterson said she could have played, but she wanted to play it safe.

No. 9 Texas Tech 66, Tenn.-Chattanooga 53

Honolulu — Plenette Pierson scored 10 of her 17 points in the second half as Texas Tech beat stubborn Tennessee-Chattanooga in the Paradise Classic.

It was the lowest offensive output this season for the Lady Raiders (6-1), who led only 36-34 at halftime. Nneka Irons led Chattanooga (6-2) with 12 points.
