Leona Pippert, Lawrence, will celebrate her 100th birthday with an open house from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 28 at Central United Methodist Church, 1501 Mass.

Pippert was born Dec. 24, 1902. She attended Globe School in the Worden area and Lawrence Business College. She was employed at Lawrence National Bank for 13 years. Leona then worked with her husband, Elmer Pippert, at Pippert’s Automotive Parts Store until 1978, when the business was sold.

After moving to Lawrence in 1925, Leona joined the First Evangelical Church, which later became the First Evangelical United Brethren Church, and is now Central United Methodist Church. She taught and worked with children in the church for almost 50 years. She is a member of the Quivira Club, which she joined in 1947.

She has a son, Raymond Pippert, Huntertown, Ind. She also has two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The Indian Hills Neighborhood Assn. will have its annual luminaria display from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. The association covers the area from Louisiana Street to Naismith Park and 25th Street to 29th Street. Members of the association can pick up supplies for the display from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at South Side Church of Christ, 1105 W. 25th St.

Wakarusa Valley School placed third in the Elementary Division of the Lindsborg Scholastic Chess Tournament on Dec. 14. Roy Wedge, a fifth-grader, went undefeated and earned the third-place medal on tie breaks.

Douglas Rawlings, a fifth-grader, finished seventh and earned a medal. Also competing for Wakarusa Valley were Alex King, fifth grade, and Darren Rawlings, first grade.

Bryce Baringer, a West Junior High School eighth-grader, earned the 14th-place medal in the Middle School Division.

Ricky Bellinger, a Broken Arrow School fifth-grader, finished 16th to earn a medal in the High School Division of the Washington Elementary Chess Tournament Dec. 14 in Olathe.

Ilan Rosen, a fourth-grader from Broken Arrow, also earned a medal for finishing sixth in the Elementary Division.
