Tulsa muscles past ORU

? Tulsa finally found an opponent it can bully inside.

Kevin Johnson and Jason Parker had 18 points apiece, helping No. 22 Tulsa defeat crosstown rival Oral Roberts 90-80 Thursday night.

Jarius Glenn and Dante Swanson had four points each in a late 12-3 run Tulsa (6-1) used to put the game out of reach. It was Tulsa’s third straight win over the Golden Eagles.

“I thought in the second half we just played tremendous,” Tulsa coach John Phillips said. “We rebounded. We guarded. We did everything we’ve been trying to get accomplished.”

Reggie Borges scored 29 points and had seven rebounds for Oral Roberts (6-2). It was an unusually lopsided game in the series — Tulsa needed overtime to win the past two seasons.

“I gave up a lot of offensive rebounds and made too many turnovers,” Borges said. “I don’t take anything positive from this.”

Glenn, starting for the injured Antonio Reed, finished with 17 points. Swanson added 16 as Tulsa claimed the 39th Mayor’s Cup, the trophy given to the game’s winner. Johnson also had eight rebounds.

Glenn’s tip-in with 3:57 remaining capped Tulsa’s definitive run, giving the Golden Hurricane their largest lead at 82-65. Tulsa then hit 8-for-12 free throws — with Parker making all six of his attempts — in the final 2:12 to seal the victory.

“I was tired of hearing all the buzz about Oral Roberts,” Glenn said. “We wanted to come out and put them away early.”

Fourteen of Tulsa’s rebounds came off the offensive backboards, a stark reversal from their loss last week to No. 19 Kansas University. The Jayhawks had 19 offensive rebounds in that game.

No. 17 Stanford 84, UC Irvine 57

Stanford, Calif. — Julius Barnes scored 24 points, and Stanford avoided its first three-game losing streak outside the Pac-10 Conference since 1969. Josh Childress added 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Cardinal (6-3), who had lost three of their previous four games since an upset victory over nationally ranked Florida in the Preseason NIT. Dan Grunfeld added 12 points and Rob Little 11.

No. 23 North Carolina 80, Vermont 54

Chapel Hill, N.C. — Rashad McCants scored 19 points, and Jackie Manuel added 14 as North Carolina forced 23 turnovers. The Tar Heels (6-2), coming off a 12-day exam break, snapped a two-game losing streak.
