She was born July 7, 1917, in La Junta, Colo., the daughter of Arthur and Eda (Pryor) Stanley. She received a bachelor of arts degree in social work from Kansas University in 1939 and a master’s degree in social work in 1966. Mrs. Thomas lived in Clinton from 1947 until she moved to Lawrence earlier this year.

Mrs. Thomas worked for the Kansas State Department of Social Welfare, where she was instrumental in developing and implementing Child Protective Services and served as its manager until she retired in 1979. She was serving her second term on the board of directors of Douglas County Senior Services and as chair of Senior Council of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce at the time of her death. She had been a member of Clinton Presbyterian Church for 55 years and held many positions within the church, Presbytery of Northern Kansas and Synod of Mid-America. She was a member of University Women’s Club, Clinton Lake Historical Society, Women’s Group of Clinton Presbyterian Church, Douglas County Republican Women and member and four-time president of No Name Club. She was also a volunteer worker for American Red Cross and supervising judge of elections for Clinton for more than 20 years.

She married Hoyt Thomas in 1943 in Clinton. He died May 21, 1972.

Survivors include two sons, Ralph Thomas, Middletown, R.I., and Charles Thomas, Richardson, Tex.; a sister, Margaret Hamilton, Overland Park; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
