Sebelius releases revenue-saving proposals
Topeka ? Gov.-elect Kathleen Sebelius on Friday released a list of more than 100 proposals aimed at saving tax dollars and making government more efficient.
The proposals were the work product of Sebelius’ appointed Budget Efficiency Savings Teams as part of her promised top-to-bottom review of state operations.
The governor-elect said the proposals would save an estimated $50 million. She declined to endorse any of the ideas, saying she hadn’t had time to analyze the work.
The next step, she said, would be determining which suggestions should be included in her budget request and which ones should be discarded.
The ideas include such items as stopping the printing of state employee telephone directories since the information is available on line; increasing the fees that the state highway department charges for billboard advertising on state highways; and reducing some state services.
Sebelius said the BEST teams and her future cabinet will continue the process of reviewing government and inviting the public to participate.
She said the process has been an “incredibly valuable tool and will be a fundamental part of the new administration and the way we do business.”
