Other options
I applaud Jack Davidson for his strength of personal integrity, willingness to stand alone and his insistence on keeping promises to those who voted for him.
Too little regard is given in this city (we’re not unique) to supporting older neighborhoods and the families who reside in them. It is NOT OK to take away their schools. I’m sure that between now and April 1 there will be a lot of convoluted rationalizations put forth why this is “necessary” along with the “need” to spend $59 million to assure quality education, and don’t forget the multimillion- dollar payout to consultants.
Of course, more money is necessary to fund our growing school district. The school board has the unenviable task of providing for the educational needs of all students in the district, including those living in areas of the city that have rapidly expanded to the west. I would like to see, (1) a larger set of separate alternative proposals put before the voters on April 1, and (2) greater coordination of urban planning between city and county commissioners and the USD 497 school board in an effort to minimize having to face the same painful and controversial problems in the future.
