Huge Buffalo rally trips Cardinal boys

? The Eudora High boys basketball squad liked its chances on Thursday, especially after Prairie View scored a whopping three points in the first quarter.

In fact, the Buffalos scored just 27 points in the first three quarters.

Oh, how things can change.

Prairie View scored 33 points in the fourth quarter, transforming from ice-cold to red-hot in a 60-53 come-from-behind victory over the Cardinals.

“We never executed our offense very well all night,” Eudora coach Scott Stein said. “And they got hot in the fourth quarter.”

Prairie View (4-2) made a dismal 1-of-15 shots in the first quarter. They missed their first 10 shots of the night, and Eudora built a 15-3 first-quarter advantage.

The Cardinals’ lead hovered between 10 and 12 points most of the night, but after the final buzzer the Buffalos had erased the deficit and built a lead of their own.

“It didn’t stun me,” Stein said. “They’ve been putting up 67 points a game. They can shoot it.”

The Cardinals had shooting woes, but unlike Prairie View never got out of the rut. Eudora shot 35 percent from the field, including 4-of-16 from three-point range.

Perhaps the only bright spot offensively was Chris Gabriel, who scored 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting off the bench.

“Chris is a good inside player,” Stein said. “I like him in a sixth-man role. He is a scorer. He’s real good in and around the bucket.”

Kaleb Niedens added 17 points for the Cardinals, who will play host to Anderson County on Jan. 10 after a three-week holiday break.

Stein welcomes the break and said several of his players went from a long postseason run in football straight to the basketball court.

“We played six games in the last two weeks,” Stein said. “I’m glad the break’s here.”
