Court hearing postponed in fatal hit-and-run case

A Tuesday court hearing to determine whether a Lawrence teen should be tried as an adult for a hit-and-run accident in September was delayed until Jan. 27.

Ashleigh Juola is accused of drinking and driving and killing 24-year-old Heather Coulter, as the woman stood outside her stalled car near the intersection of 19th and Iowa streets.

Prosecutors have filed a motion to have Juola tried as an adult on an involuntary manslaughter charge.

Hay bales set ablaze

Ottawa Ãi¿½” A series of intentionally set hay bale fires kept firefighters on the run early Tuesday in three counties, law enforcement authorities said.

About 4:30 a.m., hay bale fires were reported east of Wellsville in Miami County, Franklin County Sheriff Craig Davis said.

Within 30 minutes, fires were reported in Franklin County about two miles south of Wellsville, five miles south of Baldwin, two miles east of Wellsville and at Leloup.

About 10 a.m. in Douglas County, nine bales on the Roger Thorn farm, north of Wellsville, were destroyed.

Davis asked that anyone with information about the fires or about suspicious vehicles in the area call the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office at (785) 242-3800.

Limousine ride rewards students for fund-raising

A group of New York School students got the chauffeured ride of their young lives Tuesday for a job well done.

Students at the school raised about $3,000 by selling holiday items. Top sellers from each grade were treated to a limousine ride and lunch at McDonald’s.

Among those treated were, above from left, third-grader Ayanna Sanders, kindergartner Leah Bobek, fifth-grader Jessica Llull, sixth-grader Richie Stevenson, fourth-grader Clinton Ruff and kindergartner Solomon Cottrell, get a sneak peek at the limousine that would take them to McDonald’s as a reward for selling fund-raising items for the school.
